Natural Hair Styles That Do Not Work For Me

Thanks BGLH for the inspiration as usual...although I have been wanting to film a video about this for quite a while. There are a few natural hairstyles that don't work for me and I'm sure some of you can relate.

1. Twistouts
They look so good on others but my twists unravel UNLESS I use perm rods. I can never do them the right size anyway :(

2. Perm rod sets
Only on a section of hair 
Otherwise...



3. Mini twists.
See no.1 and also I get halfway and I think I'm never going to finish lol

I was inspired by many others to do a protective style, so I tried to a flat twist updo. This is only the second time I have flat twisted. I definitely need a rat tail comb for my defined parts!

Style: Flat twist updo

Used: A wide tooth comb for parting and hairbands for seperating, also Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie

Lasted: 3 days before I got bored and took it out lol

Natural Hair Style Files #4

Happy Christmas guys! Hope you had a great one. I told you I would be posting a lot. I'm back with a natural hair style (it's not lost as I just took this picture last week!) Look how big my bun looks. I used my tutorial here to do this style.

Style: Big Ol Bun with two flat twists

Used: A stretched headband from Primark and about seven kirby grips

Lasted: The evening...I wore this for the cinema

Lost Natural Hair Style Files #3 The Obnoxious Puff

Style: Afro Puff

Used: A stretched headband from Primark

Lasted: About 5 minutes before I thought it was too big to wear out!

Lost Natural Hair Style Files #2 The Perm Rod Set

Style: Curly Bang and Bun
Used: A hairband, African Pride Shea Butter Moisture Intense Bouncy Curls Pudding  and perm rods
Lasted: The whole day!

Lost Natural Hair Style Files #1 The Flexi Rod Set

Style: Curly Bang and Roll Tuck and Pin

Used: Kirby grips, African Pride Shea Butter Moisture Intense Bouncy Curls Pudding  and flexi rods on the bang area (overnight)

Lasted: The whole day! The curls dropped after about an hour. If I wanted more definition I would twist and then flexi rod

Another perm rod fail!

I randomly decided one evening to do a puff and bang type of hairstyle. I wanted my bang to be curly so I used perm rods, I two strand twisted the front then rolled on perm rods using my African Pride Shea Butter Moisture Intense Bouny Curls Pudding. Here were the results in the morning:

What I should have done was flat twisted the front then the front would not have been puffy. But hey you livee and you learn! My perm rods were purchased from Paks.

Natural Hair Update

I've put down the weave for a while. I have actually not worn a wig to work since early-mid  March! Which is kind of crazy considering last year I thought I was a weave addict lol. Two reasons I put down the wigs:
1) It is getting warmer and it is too hot to wear wigs!
2) I have spent a long time caring for my hair to grow it and I actually would like to enjoy it

So here is how I have been wearing my hair recently, mainly buns:

I've mainly been saving the wigs for the odd Saturday night. Other than that my hair is out and I love it!

Hairstyle How To- Marley Braid Bun

This has been done many, many times on Youtube and I was inspired to re-create this hairstyle because:
1) It's a great protective style
2) It is great for Summer when you do not want hair on your neck

I used this pack of hair- I think it was £6, I then tied a ponytail holder around it to create a loop.

I put my own hair into a bun then tied the marley braid ponytail around it and used 3 kirby grips to secure. That's it- it took 5 minutes. I would definitely down my edges with eco styler gel (apply water first) to make this hairstyle super polished.

All about my Kinky Curly Yaki Install

Okay...first of all let me say that creating this wig was drama! I resewed it two and a half times- yes it took me hours! Firstly I sewed one bundle on a wig cap which was wrong because it wasn't sturdy enough. I undid it. Secondly I sewed both bundles (I have two 16" wefts) on a weaving cap and cut the U to make a U part. Now it wouldn't blend- two different curl patterns and colours. Now I really wanted to cry :(. Finally, I asked for advice and sewed both bundles on a weaving cap using Poisonflowerivy's no closure method. Omg she is a genius! I was smiling when I finished it. This is what the hair looks like:

I have left the perimeter (my edges out) to enable me to do a part if I wish or to brush it back. I will just blend it with ecostyler gel. The only product I have used on this hair is Suave Naturals conditioner and coconut oil and water I fingercombed the hair to detangle. I thought about cutting it/thinning it but I thought no WAY not after how much I paid for it. One third of a bundle has been cut for the front. Otherwise I used every single strand of hair and I did NOT cut any wefts. I used the flip over method click here (again Poisonflowerivy's video) to see. No ma'am was I cutting any wefts- nope! I sewed over the wefts (NEVER sew through). I also sealed the wefts twice (was probably a bit heavy handed because some of the wefts have a white residue on it :/). Anywho I will be doing a video about how the hair is holding up in due course.

I knew the results were in when my brother said "Is that actually your hair?" when I told him no he said "It looks like your own hair, you should keep your hair that way it looks like it's growing from your own head". D'aww!

Another Protective Hairstyle on Natural Hair

This hairstyle is simply two french twists (or two cornrows) I did this before going to bed because I wanted some curl definition on the puff I planned to wear the next day. But this hairstyle could be good for work or the gym. The edges on my right side are so thin, I'm convinced it's due to traction alopecia from having braids too tight aged 17! They've never been the same since. I apply castor oil at least 3x week it has improved very slightly.

Natural Hair Hairstyle: Bun

Remember this puff? Well I decided to turn into a bun simply by taking three kirby grips and three sections and pinning them down around my hair. What a great protective style! I was searching on Youtube for ways to do buns on someone with my length of hair and was inspired to create this!

Mini Hair Accessory Haul & Afro Puff!

I decided to put my weave away for a week and try out some natural hairstyles. I went to the shops and bought some hair accessories to enable me to achieve some of these styles:

1: Hairbands, £1 Primark - note they have no metal band this protects against breakage and potential snagging of the hair

2: Donut, £1 Primark for buns although this is too tiny to fit over my hair -_-

3: Kirby Grips, £1.39 Superdrug

4: Black Elastic Headbands, £1 Primark for afro puffs- ensure you stretch them before!

My BEST braidout so far!

*snatched*, *gave me life*, *yes honey* - all these phrases came to mind when I took down these braids! I am so so so happy with this braidout I cannot describe- the definition omg I love it. I used my African Pride curly pudding after I washed my hair. My braidouts had not been coming out well at all. I had to think back to my relaxed days and ask myself what did I do then to get those juicy braidouts? Examples below:

I followed the same technique- I divided my hair into sections, did one braid for each section plaiting very (very) tightly at the root and all the way to the ends:

I did not use perm rods. I left these braids in for 2 days then took them down.

Results:

I can't wait for my hair to get longer - it will look even better!

Mini Twists Experiment

So as you know I am trying out a variety of natural hair styles and I decided to try mini twists. There are loads of tutorials on youtube concerning this, my favourite being from YTer Naptural85. Here is what I did:
1. Washed my hair after deep conditioning it. I then detangled it
2. Blow dried half of it using the tension method after applying my Elasta QP design silk heat protectant spray
3. Moisturised with my Curly pudding
4. Detangled again with a wide tooth comb and section by section started to twist.

5. I put kirby grips in my hair to stretch the twists overnight

6. The next night I followed steps 3 and 4 on the other half of my hair

Look at the yummy definition I get when I take a couple of twists out:

First Natural Hair Style

I two strand twisted my hair and then put rolled each two strand twist on one perm rod (except for two flat twists I did in the back because I ran out of rods!). I used all 24 rods, on one half of my hair I just used the curly pudding I reviewed here and on the other half I used the curly pudding and the Argan oil Eco Styler Gel (pictured below).

I put my hair in a puff because my curls were just all over the place! I got much better definition using the gel and pudding together:

Perm Rod Experiment

I purchased 24 perm rods for £4 from Ebay to aid my natural hair styling. This was a quick experiment to see what the results would be like using these rods. These results are with no styling product applied!
